I sent this to my co-worker who is looking into a POS system. Thanks for the info!
POS system is very interesting. I think it is very much useful in small organizations. Thanks for letting me know about this system. It is really an informative and interesting article. Thanks for sharing.
A Point of Sale (POS) system is a system for managing the sales of retail goods. The term is used to refer to the software and hardware associated with check out stands, and all of the bundled features which are included.
Thanks for reading the blog and offering a thoughtful definition on POS systems.

I guess the key is to buy a system that is going to last, you don;t want to go cheap then find you have to upgrade in 6 months!
I'm with you, Tom. As the old adage says, "Pay now or pay later." However, there are companies that try to make these POS systems more affordable.
At the risk of self-aggrandizement, we're able to provide one for $79 per year. (This is not a lease but a rental and the merchant can terminate the contract at any time without penalty -- unlike a lease.)

Very well written write-up. I literally enjoyed the concept described in the post. Once again nice work indeed.
Yeah it’s worth doing some sort of research and check both systems a bit deeper than just the price. We need an effective system that actually save you money in the long run.
Wow! Didn't know that cash registers could cost that high! I would surely like to explore POS systems as alternatives.
You have some honest ideas here. It looks like you have done a research on the issue and discovered.Anyway thanks a lot.I think most people will agree with your blog.Keep it up.
I have to agree with your post for those who want knowledge about this, like me.
You could use this system, and while it may ask more at the start, it may actually save you money in the long run.
I think POS systems are a huge waste of money. Most merchants I deal with pay an outrageous amount of money for something that really doesn't provide them with that much power. Furthermore, when a merchant is looking to switch over his processor, because he found better rates, or because a small business loan lender is requiring him to switch over, these POS providers make it a pain to switch over, and charge them additional fees. I recommend regular machines - it's simpler and faster.
Thanks so much for your comment. Your point that it may be difficult or costly to switch processors with a POS system is well taken. Indeed, many credit card companies have proprietary machines where the merchant cannot readily switch vendors.
However, there are companies that provide affordable POS sytems (ours is equivalent to a rental of $79 per year). If someone decides to leave our service, they simply return the machine.
Moreover, POS units can be quite powerful, helping inventory control, offering much more extensive reporting, etc. Think about a multilane retail establishment. A POS system can track inventory for a particular item where if cash registers were used, individual tallies from each cash register would have to be added together.

I agree, the knowledge that a pos system can give you is very powerful if you just take a little time to analyse what it is telling you.
Small business's tend to ignore this kind of information thinking it's only for the big guns. But this is so not true. It is the smaller business that needs this the most IMHO. Tracking and understanding your sales is PARAMOUNT. Anyway just my two cents.
And yes of course with any contract or lease you can get screwed, but conversely there are some good contracts and good companies out there who want to treat you well, who want to build a relationship with you and keep you as a loyal revenue generating customer. So just check the contract or lease out. The deal the OP mentioned above looks good, but have not checked it out in depth. Remember there are some good guys out there too.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! It is very important to know the intricacies of any device to fully realize the inherent benefits. I agree that tracking capabilities, afforded by these POS machines, is crucial to a business's short term and long term success.
Also, reviewing contracts -- a sometimes boring and/or challenging exercise -- is so important to avoid any possibility of being ripped off.
But, as you point out, there are good guys out there who are looking for long term business relationships and not just for quick profit.
