Negative option marketing is a technique in which companies charge consumers for their product or service based on the consumer not rejecting the offer they propose.I think this is a good type of marketing.
Well, it's an effective form of marketing but many consider it to be unethical and unfair. (I suppose Visa and MasterCard have now made their position clear on the subject.)

Ive been a victim of this Negative Billing and I thought at first that the Visa is doing it. I did a little research on the items that I purchased online and I saw the culprit. Hope Mastercard and Visa can stops this.
Hi Deborah,
Thanks for your comment! I suppose we can't blame Visa and MasterCard for everything.
Yes, I hope that the card holding associations will be effective in their quest to end forced continuity and negative option marketing/sales -- at least where there is no transparency.

Nowadays almost all merchant accept credit card payment method.. but we must be very careful, just use our credit card to the one we trust..
Absolutely as it is essential that customers feel a sense of security and trust with a vendor when using a credit card.

Credit and Debit card processing is proficient way.

Remember, merchants always have to accept credit cards by adhering to the card holding associations' rules and regulations.
Of course, even without such stipulations, business owners must be responsibile and ethical when dealing with customers (in all facets, including the acceptance of payment).

Negetive option marketing has been a huge problem on my site http://www.complaintcentre.com So many people get wrapped up in the emotion of getting a free trial, and ignore the fine print that allows for monthly charges thereafter. I am glad the credit card companies are finally doing something about it!
Hi David,
You're absolutely correct. It is imperative that people understand what commitment they're making when purchasing a product or service ... or even when signing up for something that is "free." The terms and conditions must also be reviewed!
Thanks for your comment!

Credit cards always will have to be accepted by online retailers
Yes and it's important that retailers refrain from using unethical strategies in which to secure customers and subsequent payment.

I think you're being facetious. This type of marketing is great in teaching how NOT to conduct business.

I think it's a great move on their part. If you are familiar with any of those free trial health products out there then you know just how out of control it had gotten.
I think it is deceptive to offer a free trial and then sneakily enroll a customer on one or multiple rebills.
It always seems like I'm reading about yet another new online rule regarding making money. But then again, it makes sense regarding the internet still is relatively new in comparison to "real world business".

Hi Alec,
I'm in complete agreement with you as too many business owners rationalize that negative option marketing is an acceptable, widespread practice and then follow this negative example.
Now that the cardholding associations have clamped down on this type of marketing and billing, less individuals will be victimized. Merchants will be forced to be more transparent in their offerings. Some new rules ARE actually good ones!
