Hi Daniel,

Thanks so much for finding my blog and posting your thoughts.

I concur that opting out programs will lead to short term gain but ultimately to long term loss. The asset of credibility may very well be lost as well.

We're fortunate that only one of our parent companies has instituted this policy. (By the way, we make no commission on this opting out program.) But this is one of the reasons why serving as a representative for any entity can result in a heap of trouble -- even if one has mastered the ABC's of selling. Indeed, one can go down with the ship if those at the helm adopt merchant-unfriendly and unfair policies.

I better read your book to expand my options.

Best Regards,
Thanks Andy for posting this across. Opting Out programs though benefit the company but the benefit is only for a short term. If the customer is charged for a service that he/she is unaware and perhaps, do not like that service in that case, it is the loss of company losing the customer base. As an author and a businessman, one thing I know is that though it is a common practice for most of the organizations but one should keep in mind both the interests of customer and service provider as well.

Thanks for touching base. I completely agree with you, and at times, a new opting out program may be introduced without any free time period.

You're right, many consumers will react by cancelling their service with companies that don't respect their rights.
Hi, This is so unacceptable. Why would these providers sign up these merchants automatically when they do not call back to cancel after a short timeframe of getting the product for free? Are they really out of their minds. Yes, I agree with you all. Taking action by the way is one clear move if these providers violate consumers' rights.

    Thanks for your comment.

Well, we agree that full disclosure is of the utmost importance. While companies stand to gain financially from these opting out programs, their overall credibility can easily be compromised --in essence, possibly lowering future profit.

I almost wish that laws would prohibit opting out initiatives. It' perfectly permissible to offer new programs to one's client base, but they should be the opting in and not opting out variety.

Best Regards,
Your point is well-taken as there has been a proliferation of these opting out programs ... unfortunately.

Therefore, we cannot just quickly discard mail from the vendors that we're using, deeming it "junk mail." Although it's time-consuming, it's important to read any letter to avoid implicitly agreeing to the terms of a new, fee-based program.

Best Regards,
This is very true, Andy. It's happening to almost everyone because these online merchants just can't seem to let go of a prospect. Just when you think you've opted out, a new offer comes along. Emails still keep coming in too.

Opting out programs should be available to merchants. Not only that, all information in a certain company should be given to it's members. I do understand that sometimes some companies would not let the clients know about this type of program but at the same time. The company's credibility is also at stake if they don't let it's members know about it. I honestly wish that all companies would be up front about their programs.
