I didn't know retailers had to pay for credit card swiping, that must be extra difficult for smaller retailers. There should be some law that requires banks to disclose their fee rates.
Hi Emma,
Yes, retailers are responsible for processing costs -- at least those who accept credit cards. Such costs certainly should be factored into their total operating costs.
This is why retailers have to know their TOTAL costs and it should be a moral imperative -- and perhaps a legal imperative -- for banks and providers to manifest full disclosure of rates.

Thanks for sharing such a useful information. I am definitely going to consider it next time.
The main issues pertains and with the credit card service provide, how they will charge and disclose the policy governing around them
Thanks for your comment. Some providers contend that the rates and policies are outlined in the contract and terms but it appears that agents should do a lot better job reviewing the complete fee structure with important accompanying policies.

What banks do not work properly in a current world situation. They are the ones that will feel the recession and [invent and hide] costs. This is good.
Thanks for your comment. Regardless of economic concerns, banks and merchant account companies are ethically bound to relay all costs and not "manufacture" any other fees to pad profit.

Interesting post. Its nice to read a useful blog for beginner like me.Thanks for sharing.Thank you very much.Keep blogging.
Thanks for posting such an insightful article. Even i was not aware of the charges that the retailers had to bear. This is not fair in a way i think esp keeping small retailers in mind. Thanks for sharing this with all us. Look forward to your future posts.
Hi Fred,
Thanks so much for your comment. The merchant account providers are providing a service, and as such, are entitled to a profit.
The problem is that as the card holding associations raise their fees, the credit card processing companies in turn raise their fees to the retailers -- who then pass rising costs to customers.
Let's hope credit card processing rates stabilize in the future and not continue to go on an upward spiral.

Credit card processing is always a tricky subject since most companies want to but it inhibits their costs when using it. Great articles on this blog!
Yes, Duane, many businesses find it's an essential to accept credit cards but it definitely increases operational costs.
I have discussed the pros and cons of accepting credit cards in other blog entries but it appears that for most businesses, particularly on the net, the benefits of taking plastic outweighs the negatives.

It seems like a distinct competitive disadvantage for smaller merchants to pay significantly more than the Walmarts of the word. Not only can Walmart out buy them they can save more money per transaction. That seems like a game swaying in favor of the big guy. One way to compete on a more even playing field would see to be online where a company would eliminate their brick and mortar store and significantly reduce overhead costs. This coupled with a strategic online presence and a healthy dose of SEM, SEO and a shopping cart for good measure would sure go a long way.
Thanks so much for your astute comment. Yes, it almost seems unfair that the large players on the business landscape always seem to accrue the most advantages -- ensuring that they stay large players.
On the Internet, smaller companies can more readily compete, provided that they continue to enhance their visibility.

Taxes are the problem! I guess the rate would stabilize in the future!Smaller merchants are truly disadvantaged!
Hi Letitia,
I live in New Jersey and I constantly hear a collective chorus of discontent with rising taxes.
I just read an article that increasing unemployment taxes could hinder small business owners from hiring more employees.
Of course, sales tax impacts the consumer, too, who may decide to shop less to avoid it -- thereby affecting smaller merchants' cash flow.
Small business owners often have to face more challenges than their counterparts who own large businesses but success is still attainable through the avenues of high visibility, effective marketing, exemplary customer support, etc.

Credit card processing is certainly an expense but there are many affordable merchant account companies which should allay your fears.
Processing is an operational cost which you may be able to build into your pricing.

With the advance in technology, credit cards are becoming increasingly important and with them the credit card swipe machines are gaining strength. But I am aware of the cost the services make
very nice idea, i think.
but credit card processing is too expensive nowadays.
but credit card processing is too expensive nowadays.
As economic conditions are certainly challenging, any money apportioned to credit card processing may be deemed "too expenseive."
However, there are many companies that provide a retail merchant account for less than $10 per month and with rates between about 1.5% to 3.5% per transaction.
Of course, there are other costs involved and it's important to know all the applicable fees.
Still, affordable or discount merchant account providers are available to offer their service.
