What do you recommend people with poor credit do to get their online business running? Are there merchant accounts willing to work with us?
Hi and thanks for your question. There are merchant account providers who will allow you to obtain a cosigner with good credit, provided you have an LLC or incorporated your business. (Sole proprietors typically do not have this option.)
Another alternative is to research high risk merchant accounts. (You can perform a Google search on such a phrase.) Some vendors are more amenable to working with those who don't have a good credit score, but often their rates will be (much) higher than standard rates.
I hope this information helps.

There will be businesses and banks willing to work with you if you have poor credit but if you have ever hard any CCJ's you will find it difficult. I am no financial expert but know through my own experiences. The article was handy. thanks.
Yes, county court judgments or a recent bankruptcy can adversely affect a merchant's credit card processing application.
Underwriters try to look at the "total picture," however. For example, one former underwriter told me that he did not view outstanding medical bills as harshly as other sources of outstanding debt when looking at a credit report.
Thanks for your comment!

Hi Myles,
Yes, there is a learning curve when one needs to acquire credit card processing capability. I hope that the information I provide helps to make the process a little easier.
There are many affordable merchant account providers so please perform your due diligence. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for recommending my blog before one tries to open a merchant account.
Obviously, I'm sorry that your application was not initially approved. I hope that you have better luck with the next attempt.
This brings up another point: One merchant account may decline an application, and another one may have more liberal underwriting policies and approve the same application.

Google checkout and Paypal are great ways for businesses to start accepting credit cards. If you are a business, you need a merchant account.
Yes, Google Checkout, PayPal, and other third party processors may be viable options for business owners who are just starting out. However, many prefer to open a merchant account with a full service, true merchant account provider.
While third party processors typically have lower monthly fees, they often have higher transaction fees.
I've written more about third party processors and merchant accounts in the following blog entry:

Great article. This blog is so useful for me because now time I am interested in opening a merchant account. To start credit card merchant account is so easy and then we can organize a small party to help [increase] credit card sales.
Thanks for the compliment! Many merchants may feel immobilized, unable to open a merchant account as they believe the process is too difficult. Upon further inspection, such merchants may gain reassurance that the process is relatively straightforward and not complex at all.

Easy and clear - thanks for sharing. I wonder if you have any tips on finding the best (cheapest) merchant account.
Hi Arthur,
Would it be self-serving to say look at the company that sponsors my blog?
With all due immodesty, I hope that any merchant looks at our fee structure when comparing credit card processing companies.
The best way of finding the best (cheapest) merchant is still with pen at hand. Compare all fixed and variable rates, and keep an eye on your particular business model. For example, if your business runs small transactions (say less than $15), perhaps the transaction rate may even be more important than the discount percentage.
In another example, if your business only runs very few transactions, it may be especially important to evaluate the monthly fees, and in particular, any possible monthly minimum fee.
Of course, as you compare rates, also look at the reputation of the company, its years in business, the customer support available, etc.

I'm looking to start on online business and I would like to get suggestions on the best deals on merchant accounts. What should I look for?
Thanks for your question. The following may be criteria to use when selecting a merchant account provider:
- Reputation of the credit card processing company. Perform your due diligence and find out about the standing of the credit card processing company.
- Are ALL rates outlined? Full disclosure is very important and reflects the honesty and integrity of the company.
- Obviously, look for competitive rates, keeping an eye on the monthly and processing fees.
- High quality of service. Does the credit card processing company respond to you in a timely manner? Are all questions answered and is the information provided thorough and complete?
There are other factors to weigh but the aforementioned ones seem the most important.

Thanks for sharing the information. My uncle is opening a new superstore and he actually asked me the procedure and I was completely blank to his question. One should know these things.
You're welcome. This information is truly important for business owners as many will need to open a merchant account.
Your uncle should find the process rather straightforward and easy to follow. I wish him well with his new superstore!
