You did not mention Paypal, Google or other online merchant accounts. Mind if I ask what your thoughts on these are?
Hi Josh,
Thank you so much for your insightful comment.
Third party processors, such as PayPal, may very well offer a viable option for those who run businesses that are deemed high risk.
Such companies have no formal underwriting process which may be advantageous to those who have less than favorable credit and/or conduct businesses that may be considered prohibitive by typical merchant account providers.
Moreover, third party processors may be the only option available for merchants who are on a Terminated Merchant File (TMF) and cannot secure credit card processing capability through a standard merchant account provider.
PayPal and other third party processors may also be a blessing in disguise for merchants who do little processing volume as they tend to have low or no associated monthly costs. (Still, there are vendors in the merchant account field that can compete with such companies.

Can u me provide more detail of Paypal Scheme (Premium)?
Thanks for asking me about PayPal, particularly relevant if a merchant cannot obtain a typical merchant account (due to a high risk business, is not US-based, etc.).
I believe that you are referring to PayPal's Payment Pro service. Please see the following link for further information:

Good info about merchant accounts. I run a travel company in Hawaii and have a high risk merchant account. They ask for a lot of information in order to get approved.
Hi Hawaii,
Thanks for providing a first-hand glimpse of the hoops a merchant may have to jump through to get a high risk merchant account.
Some vendors do ask for a lot of information in order to be certain that they can underwrite a given business.
(Travel businesses are definitely considered higher risk because of potential chargeback issues.)
Again, thanks so much for sharing your experience!

I have heard of people taking entire vacations and then requesting a chargeback for the entire trip with the hope they get a free vacation! What nerve people have!
Anyways, great blog. I look forward to reading more post/entries that you may have around merchant accounts.

Hi Josh,
I've heard of similar chargeback episodes. It is unconscionable when customers "use the system" and no better when merchants take advantage of customers.
It's reassuring to know most people are honest and do not play such games.

Its getting harder to get a merchant account especially in this economy. Especially selling virtual goods or services its been difficult. I think the merchant account companies are tightening things up lately with the downturn in the economy, and credit not being as widely available. Paypal is the next great thing after your own merchant account. Easy to setup and get an account.
Yes, it appears that bank and merchant account underwriting groups are becoming more conservative as they evaluate applications. Providing credit card processing capability itself presents a risk (even a small one) to the powers that be.
Still, an overwhelming majority of applications are approved and it's not too difficult to open a merchant account under most circumstances. (I'm not referring to high risk businesses.)
PayPal is definitely an option for those who cannot secure a merchant account. However, for those who can contract with a true merchant account provider, it may be advisable to do so.

Hey, I have been wondering about this issue for some times.
Thanks for sharing.
It's very kind of you.

You have to see it from the bank's point of view. Especially at the current time, they are wary of their own money as we all are. If they suspect you will fail or they simply have no reason to trust in you, then they won't. It's sensible business practice.
Thanks for your astute comment! Absolutely, businesses have to be circumspect about their "lending practices." Remember, providing credit card processing capability is tantamount to lending because of potential chargebacks.

Really?! Is it true that high risk merchant account can really lower the risks for a declined application? Hmmm... sounds really interesting to prove huh. Anyway thanks for sharing. Now I have an idea about this strategy for a merchant account
Hi Freddie,
Let's look at the matter through this prism: A high risk merchant account may be the only recourse for merchants who own certain businesses -- aside from opting to go with a third party processor.
A merchant who runs a registered, online pharmacy, for example, may find it difficult to open a standard merchant account. However, there are merchant account providers who will underwrite for such a business but categorize the business as "high risk," and no doubt, charge higher fees.
There are other providers who offer a two-tiered underwriting process. If an application is not approved under the standard tier, it may be approved under the high risk tier (with higher rates).
My blog entry is simply directed to merchants who may not know that they can secure credit card processing even if they own businesses that are typically on most providers' prohibitive lists.
For the overwhelming majority of business owners who own run-of-the-mill businesses and have decent credit, a high risk merchant account is not necessary.
Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and please continue to read and respond to my blog.

We ahve been denied multiple times for merchant accounts when in fact we had good credit. When you have a high volume business with a high average ticket (few thousand dollars or more) than the chances of getting approved even get worse. I hope the economy takes a turn for the better as soon as possible
Hi Greg,
I'm so sorry that you experienced such difficulty in obtaining a merchant account. This must be particularly disconcerting as you have good credit.
It is true that a high volume, high ticket business presents more of a risk to merchant account providers -- but also offers more potential reward.
I wonder if prior chargebacks have been an initiated. This may pose a problem for many merchant account vendors.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you need further assistance.

Good post. Your openness to be contacted helps a lot when there are concerns.I really love people who have a heart to serve others and they are benefiting many as well as their own self. People like this are given rewards.
Hi and thanks for your praise. I see that you are in the merchant account field as well. I'm sure you also embrace the notion that the merchant account field should be considered a "helping field."

As a collection agency 10 years ago we had issues getting a merchant account. Because of our very low chargeback rate and history of processing it seems to be a non issue for our agency at this time. 90% of all our payments today come from debit card transactions, without a merchant account we would be dead in the water.
Yes, it is difficult for collection agencies to secure a merchant account as this type of business is considered high risk with a deemed greater probability for chargebacks.
I'm so glad that you were able to find a provider, enabling you to accept credit cards and grow your business.
I wish your company well in the future!
