"An Internet Merchant Account Opens Doors to E-Commerce"
If you want or need to have more returns on your business, you have to take it
online. In today’s world of the Internet, no business can succeed if it does not go online. Your consumers will know more about your brand’s presence through the Internet. To be competitive, you should be able to conduct Internet sales.
For doing this, the most important thing you will need is a merchant account.
What is a merchant account?
A merchant account is a type of bank account that will allow you or your
business to accept payments by credit or debit cards. It serves as an agreement between a merchant bank, a retailer and
payment processor to settle credit card or debt transactions.
If a customer wants to buy your product online, all he/she will have to do is
click on the “buy” button and provide his credit card details. The merchant account system checks for any fraudulent use of the card and passes on the
information, which is encrypted, for security reasons. Then it communicates with the bank to complete the transaction.
* Advantages and disadvantages of online merchant accounts *
Some advantages of online merchant account are:
*** Instant authorization: You do not have to wait for clearance of
checks, because with advanced automation, you will immediately know if the payment is valid or not. It will save you time and the frustration
associated with a normal transaction.
*** Easy accessibility: You will have easy and simple access to sites
and thus can avoid sending or writing a check or calling in an order.
*** Streamline payment process: You will require a few simple steps
for valid payment assurance in comparison to less automated payment processes.
*** Extra direct sales channel: The credit card processors will help
you to add Internet sale as revenue generator.
*** Increased functionality: The Internet processors turn a regular
website into an e-commerce site. So, the functionality of that site increases. The websites having merchant accounts become sales generators
instead of simple online brochures or lead generators.
Some disadvantages of online merchant account are:
*** Fees: You have to make monthly payments for various Internet
merchant accounts and this can sometimes confuse you.
*** Your responsibility: It will be your sole responsibility to look into
the site function, while you will process your own Internet account. If there is any discrepancy regarding technical issues or field service, you
will have to resolve it on your own.
*** Chances of fraud: If you face any fraud regarding online payment or
credit card processing, you will have to deal with the fraud as a merchant.
*** Agreement: Some of these accounts have long term agreements, which makes a
tedious process for you, as commitment to the process is only minimum time frame and/or dollar minimums.
*** Security: As the Internet merchant account is only a single piece of
secure and reliable payment system, there is high chance of theft or alteration of credit card numbers along with web spoofing and breach of
system integrity.
To expand your business, you can take advantage of merchant account, but you
should keep in mind about the fees and other risks associated with it.
